The Great Local Lunch is Australia's biggest crowd-farmed feast - a free four-course banquet whose ingredients are grown by the guests themselves and crafted into a gourmet menu by innovative Melbourne chefs.
Hosted by Costa Georgiadis, from ABC’s Gardening Australia, this event brings together over 200 local farmers, backyard growers, and eager gleaners for a delicious celebration of urban agriculture, native and seasonal ingredients, and sustainable food production.
Tickets cannot be bought, but rather exchanged for homegrown produce contributed to the event from guests’ summer harvests. The Great Local Lunch is a meal on a mission to redefine how we think about food and waste, so gleaned contributions are also encouraged in the form of safely recovered food that would otherwise go to landfill; products grown or made with a creative use of food waste; and foraged weeds, native plants, and herbs.
These sustainably sourced ingredients are collected in the lead up to The Great Local Lunch and then transformed into a completely original 4-course menu in only 24 hours by chefs who will not know what they’re getting until the day before.
After a season of growing and gleaning, Melbourne's forward-thinking foodies will gather on the banks of the Yarra River to share in the fruits of their labour, network with the movers and shakers of the city's local food scene, and exchange ideas about increasing food security, reducing food waste, and disrupting traditional polluting food systems.
Registrations close on 25 January 2019, but early entries will receive priority for tickets.
