Join in legal training to be a legal observer at protests and events. Each 3-hour training covers: Area coverage and observation skills; Legal observer protocols and mandate; recording and documenting police action; interactions with police; safety and team logistics.
Legal or human rights observers document breaches of human rights, arrests, use of force incidents and report upon policing and police behaviour. Legal Observers can provide reassurance for people when confronted by a large police presence. MALS fields legal observers to monitor human rights at a wide range of protests, actions and rallies on environmental and social justice issues.
To become a legal observer for MALS you are required to attend one Training session and two practical in the field (upcoming protests) with a buddy. Legal observing is suitable for all persons and abilities. Practicing lawyers and law students are strongly encouraged to get involved.
We have introduced a small fee to help us cover costs:
Solidarity rate: $30
Please choose the free option if these are not possible.
We encourage people who have done other LO trainings to have a refresher.
Although this training is a requirement for being a Legal Observer with MALS in the future, it is also a great opportunity to get to know the basics of Legal Observing and use these skills in your own organisation.
