Newcastle, we need to talk.
Should our governments allow new coal in a climate crisis?
Speakers:
* Anote Tong, former President of Kiribati (via Zoom)
* Independent ACT Senator, David Pocock
* Professor Lesley Hughes, Director the Climate Council
In Muloobinba/Newcastle, we are at the coalface of the climate emergency. Our port is the largest coal port in the world. When burnt, the coal it exports equals about 1% of global emissions – almost as much as our entire domestic emissions combined.
The UN Secretary General said recently that the “climate time-bomb is ticking”, that “humanity is on thin ice, and that ice is melting fast.”
The science demands there can be no new coal projects. Yet the Hunter coal industry is pursuing massive coal expansions and the continuation of coal exports through to 2050.
Join us at Newcastle City Hall for a critical conversation about our region and the role we will play in the future of planet Earth. What is at stake? Will we continue to fuel the existential climate crisis? Or will we play our part and show the world that change is possible?
