Oceans Plastics Congress

Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre

Turning the tide
This inaugural Congress is a major new initiative that aims to accelerate efforts to repair the damage done through past negligence on plastic waste in our oceans and to find long term solutions for our oceans, sea life and human health. Ultimately, we recognize the need to eliminate the problem at its source – the entry of waste plastics into our rivers, streams, storm water, and, ultimately, the ocean. Plastic is currently a key part of our lives – the critical steps to address are limitation of usage (particularly single-use plastic), recycling and disposal.

Turning the Tide will be held in Melbourne from December 2-6, 2019. This Congress will be a recurring event, to be hosted in other global cities.

The 2019 Congress will be hosted by the Victorian Government, with WWF and other organisations as the lead Conference advocates. It will bring together over 2,000 scientists, public policymakers, industry and the community sector in the search for solutions to the multiplicity of problems resulting from ocean plastics. It will include invited speakers and a scientific stream, based on peer-reviewed papers.

A multi-disciplinary Organising Committee of experts, community advocates, policymakers and business is devising a program in three themes:

Understanding the problem the current state of knowledge on the scale of the problem and its impacts

Managing the problem what has worked to stop waste plastic from reaching the oceans and to clean up what’s already there

Solving the problem innovation: new products, new processes and changing consumer behaviour; government policy: encouraging innovation and regulation

Repairing the damage done by past practices will take many years. This Congress will provide a unique and compelling forum where successes can be shared and strategies for the future can be debated and agreed. In addition to the Congress there will be a number of activities to engage the public.

We hope that you will be able to lend your support to this long-overdue initiative and join us in Melbourne.

Regards,

Matthew Jackson
