ARCCO as proud to announce the inaugural “Rethinking the Urban Forest” cross-sector conference. For the first time, we will bring together arborists, academics, activists, ecologists, planners, project managers and politicians from Sydney and beyond to discuss the benefits and the roadblocks to urban forest planning, taking into account issues like climate change, habitat and biodiversity loss, and the infrastructural demands of a fast-growing city like ours.

Devised and presented by Addison Road Community Centre Organisation (ARCCO), the Rethinking the Urban Forest Conference reflects ARCCO’s commitment to creating programs that enhance community life across the Inner West. It has been developed in conjunction with our event partners, 202020 Vision, Macquarie University, Inner West Council and ArborSafe.

How do we improve the urban forest canopy cover to provide much-needed shade in our hot summers? What is the relationship between a greener environment and our mental and physical well-being? As city-life increasingly involves high-density apartment living and large-scale offices, how might we use ‘green walls’ to offset pollutant chemicals released from plastics and synthetics? How can local councils apply academic thinking and specialised research in practical ways? On your local street, what is behind decisions to cut down, save or plant trees? How can these ideas and actions enhance local bio-diversity (plants, birds, insects, bats)? How do we improve communication and cooperation to create a greener, better urban environment?
