Lawyers and law students, assist the community to protect the environment through legal action

Long term volunteer role
Queensland

Volunteering for the EDO Qld offers people an opportunity to gain experience in public interest environment law, while supporting the work of the EDO. Volunteers make an invaluable contribution to our work and increase our capacity to provide legal advice to individuals and the community seeking to use the law to protect the environment. Our in-house volunteer programs are for legal professionals, law students and law graduates.

Professional Volunteers

EDO Qld offers professional volunteers a great opportunity to diversify their environmental law experience. We rely on lawyers working in relevant fields to assist in the areas of casework and advice, policy and law reform, and educational publishing.

We are currently seeking lawyers with preferably two or more years post admission experience in planning or environmental law to help staff our telephone advice line about once a month. The advice line sessions run once a week on a Tuesday or Thursday evening from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Advice queries spread across local, Queensland and national laws, and often relate to issues such as planning and development processes, pollution incidents and wildlife management.

We do full conflict of interest checks to protect our clients and volunteer solicitors. If you are interested please send your CV and a covering email to edoqld@edo.org.au or call Bronwyn on 3211 4466. If you have any questions about volunteering with EDO Qld, please contact us.

Law Student Volunteers

Volunteers answer the phones, undertake legal research, assist on casework and projects and sometimes carry out administrative tasks. We run three volunteer programs for law students:

Day Volunteer Placement Program: Starting in February each year, volunteers work one full day per week for a minimum of one semester. Rosters are organised each semester and are finalised February and late July. If a casual vacancy arises during semester, applications on file will be reviewed.

Law Student Volunteers – Semester in practice: Many Queensland law schools provide law students with elective units where they are placed with a host organisation to work one full day a week for a semester. EDO Qld will consider applications for a clinical placement through your university. If you have a particular interest in volunteering at EDO Qld, you should speak with the convenor of the subject at your law school and arrange to apply for a placement.

The Evening Advice Line Program: Our advice line runs from 5:30 to 7:30pm once a week on a Tuesday or Thursday evening. Volunteers work one evening a week for a minimum of one semester. Rosters are organised each semester and are finalised at the end of February and late July. If a casual vacancy arises during semester, applications on file will be reviewed. Please apply as per the Day Program and state your preference for evening advice line.

Law students with an interest in environmental issues and environmental law should apply. Depending on capacity, we may also be able to offer volunteer places during the summer and winter breaks. Please be aware that limited positions are available, so we are not able to accept all applicants.

If you are interested please send your CV and a covering email to edoqld@edo.org.au or call Bronwyn on 3211 4466. If you have any questions about volunteering with EDO Qld, please contact us.

Eco-shout promotes jobs, internships and volunteer opportunities in environmental and social justice organisations. Add a vacancy to the list and we'll share it through social media at peak times and do our best to shout about it. Share the list with your grumpy mates who think there's nothing out there.
