Come live with us at The Yard on Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung country
The Yard is a rental in Preston that was started in 2012. Whilst our home has seen many come and go over the years, the initial dream of The Yard has stayed. This is a place that is first and foremost aligned with caring for people, and planet. We always aim to practice permaculture, building an economy of sharing within an ever-expanding community. First and foremost in such endeavors is decolonisation. Therefore, each month we opt to Pay The Rent to First Nations organisations.
Now, about the place. The Yard is a huge 750m2 of rented goodness and features a very large garden of veggies, fruit trees, bees, a glasshouse, fire bath, shed, hammocks and plenty of outside spaces to chill and enjoy life. Our California Bungalow is raised and has wooden floorboards throughout. This makes it cool in summer, but a bit drafty (let’s be honest, it’s a bit cold) in winter. There are three (possibly a fourth to also rent) bedrooms, an open living area, bathroom with bath and a separate toilet/laundry.
We are just off High Street, a 5 min walk to Preston Market and station, and not much further to the 86 and 11 trams. There’s a direct link to the St Georges bike path for easy cycling to all the things – (Darebin creek, Merri Creek, Edgars Creek and Edwards Lake are ALL within a 5km radius!)
You'll be living with Clem & Rohan and Anne. We’re three friendly beans in their 20s-30s, oh, and the two senior citizen cats, Haiku and Spangle. We love sharing meals, trying to practice permaculture, listening to all sorts of music, making things, learning and growing, games, hanging out, going on bike rides, watching the sunset (and the neighbours) from the porch, talking nonsense, eating pancakes every Sunday and planning to overthrow capitalism.
A little more about us!...
¬Anne's heart is shattered by our climate crisis, and through full time climate activist work hopes to lessen some of that eco-anxiety. If it weren’t for you-know-what… She’d be out scuba eco-diving in South America. Now she’s learning the ways of permaculture and continuously adding new knowledge and experience on how to live simple and frugally.
¬Clem is having a mid-life environmental crisis and has just recently gotten the hell out of full-time desk-bound work to study a Diploma of Science so she can help with ecological restoration and land regen. She likes talking to the local birds, apologising to insects, wondering about everything, and then looking it up, getting side-tracked, and playing board and RPG games. She is a habitual collector of books, ideas and broken objects and is currently interested in spiritual ecology, mythology and learning math.
¬Rohan has had the pleasure of not working for “the man” for some time. This has meant that he has been spending possibly too much time in the garden (no such thing). He loves trial and error, being active, eating all the greens, occasionally blasting music (most likely classical or techno) out of speakers positioned either in the shared space inside or outside, evaluating everything, medicinal plants and tincture making, evolving, fossicking for urban treasure, and all styles and variances of creation.
*Clem and Roh(an) are partners, as well as the humans of the two aforementioned kitties.
What are we looking for in a collaborator? You are respectful, sharing, caring, creative, playful, and considerate, whilst able to be autonomous. Our garden is really the main point of interest here and should be able to supply most of our food, with some to share. So, we would really love if you are into creating and sharing abundance in such ways. Vegan and vegetarian diets are preferred, but open to others. Queer and quirky types will be most welcome and safe in or space. Based on previous experiences, our communal home would most likely suit someone who isn’t in full-time work. Couples are welcome but the rental cost would change appropriately.
The available rooms ~
A. This spacious room is 3x4ish and can come with the queen sized loft bed as pictured.
B. This sunlight filled room is 2.5 x 2.7 + (1.3 x 1.7… two storey ;-)
Spaces are available around the end of Oct - ideally filling by the end of that month.
Rent range (depending on which space / how many peeps) $400-$510.
Bond is $690
We all currently share our food and put in $185 to a joint bank account to fund this and most bills (our electricity and gas usage is low due to obvious environmental reasons).
Long term preferable, but open to other situations.
Please send us a letter of introduction, fan-mail, questions, grammar corrections or recipes to the if you think you may be the one.
