Dance of the Plants

Sunday, 28 May 2023 - 10:30am
Selby Community House, 1 Minak Rd Selby
Wurundjeri Country
Victoria

Come share time with me and my senior Elder Uncle Mervyn Brown. Uncle Merv is the oldest living Bunurong man and holds a wealth of cultural knowledge so this will be a rare opportunity to sit with him and talk about what it was like growing up on the Bass Strait Islands.

We are going to make the day extra special as we share a cultural foods meal with you which will include our traditional food of mutton bird. Its very rare for us to be able to do this but we have been lucky enough to source some birds from the Islands and will be flying some over for you. Uncle Merv will explain the significance of "The Moonbird (mutton bird) as we cook up some on the barbecue for everyone to try. We will sit down and eat together as we share stories from our family and our history.

My name is Sonia I am the owner of Dance of the Plants and the author of Kulin Tales. My specialty is plants so I`ll be walking you through the bush food garden before lunch. I will tell you stories and share plant use and language that is important to the Bunurong/Kulin people. I will also share a historical timeline of how the Bunurong Community survived and still flourish today.

We will conduct an open forum with lots of time for you to ask questions to myself and Uncle Merv.
